Farm Systems
Explore the vibrant landscape of sheep farming systems in New Zealand, designed to cater to the diverse needs of sheep milk producers and farm operations. We delve into innovative rearing systems aimed at boosting milk production while nurturing the growth and well-being of lambs. Through interactive exploration of various feeding systems, we aim to empower farmers with solutions for high-yield and top-quality dairy production.
Effect of weaning system on lamb growth, mammary gland development and ewe milk production in dairy sheep managed in an outdoor pasture-based commercial farming system
The study compared a mixed suckling and milking system with a traditional suckling-only system for dairy sheep and their young. Results showed that the mixed system didn't harm the sheep or their offspring's performance, with similar growth and milk quality observed in both systems.
Impact of early weaning on small intestine, metabolic, immune and endocrine system development, growth and body composition in artificially reared lambs1
This study examined the impact of early weaning (EW) using restricted milk replacer (MR) feeding on lambs' growth, feed intake, blood metabolites, and small intestine development. Results showed that EW lambs had lower intake of DM, ME, CP, and NDF, as well as reduced body weight and average daily gain from week 3 to 6 compared to Control (Ctrl) lambs. However, no significant differences were found in duodenal morphology, organ and carcass weights, or immune function between groups. The study suggests that lambs can be weaned off MR by 4 or 6 weeks without compromising key growth and health parameters.
Effects of Dairy Lambs’ Rearing System and Slaughter Age on Consumer Liking of Lamb Meat and Its Association with Lipid Content and Composition
This study assessed consumer liking of East-Friesian-cross dairy lamb Longissimus lumborum muscle based on rearing system (artificial vs. natural milk-fed) and slaughter age (3-weeks milk-fed vs. 3-months pasture-fed). While intramuscular fat content was similar between treatments, slaughter age significantly influenced consumer preference, with meat from 3-weeks-old lambs being preferred overall. This suggests a niche market opportunity for 3-weeks milk-fed lambs.
Sheep Milk: Nutrition and farm systems
This study investigates strategies to enhance sheep milk production and quality while promoting lamb growth and health within farm systems. Through the evaluation of various rearing and feeding systems, the research examines their impact on animal health and food production. Results highlight the importance of optimized farm systems in elevating milk yield, improving lamb health, and influencing the production and flavor of dairy products.
